No More D-Rats For MERT

Paul, WB4QQN, announced (Ocober 5th, 2022) that there would no longer be any practice with D-Rats over the MERT internet connection during the weekly MERT net. Over the air practice with D-rats had been dropped some time ago. MERT appears to be putting all of it’s eggs, so to speak, in the Winlink basket.

So I asked Paul, WB4QQN, what the staus of D-star and D-rats was now, considering there was no more practice of D-rats on the Thursday MERT net. His reply:

ED,
AS FAR AS I KNOW D-RATS HAS BEEN ELIMINATED AS NO LONGER SERVES A REAL PURPOSE, BUT D-STAR IS STILL GOOD AND WILL REMAIN IN SERVICE AS ALWAYS. LEON CAN PROBABLY BE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT IT.
PAUL

I checked today (10/16/2022) for the internet connection to the ratflector. The IP address still connects to the MCSO interent system, but there is no ratflector running. I checked over the air on KK4DFC and there is not a D-rats connection running there either. The capability to run D-rats over KK4DFC is still operational.

Just beause MERT has dropped it doesn’t mean it isn’t still an important tool for emergency communications. Just because MERT doesn’t use it doesn’t mean the rest of the world can’t.

Just don’e give up on it.
